The key step in performing defensive driving, particularly regarding straight line and stopping procedures, involves maintaining a constant speed. This approach allows the driver to have greater control of the vehicle, enhances their ability to react to potential hazards, and improves overall stability while driving. By keeping a steady pace, the driver can better anticipate the need for stopping or making adjustments in response to surrounding traffic conditions. This practice also reduces the likelihood of abrupt maneuvers, which can be dangerous in defensive driving scenarios.

On the other hand, other options such as accelerating through all gears without stopping, only reversing for short distances, or making sharp turns at intersections do not contribute to the principles of defensive driving. Accelerating through all gears without stopping may lead to difficult handling and an inability to react appropriately to sudden changes in the environment. Only reversing for short distances is more about specific maneuvering than the overall defensive driving strategy. Lastly, making sharp turns at intersections can create instability and increase the risk of losing control, which contradicts the objectives of defensive driving that prioritize safety and maneuverability.
